When Things Fall Apart, Look Up

In a world where everything seems to be falling apart at times, Chinua Achebe comes to mind. The title of his novel, “Things Fall Apart” which has created an impeccable impact over the years since its release, has been used as a reference to various situations where humanity finds itself at a point beyond crumbling.

Albert Chinualumogu Achebe, commonly known as Chinua Achebe was born on 16th November 1930 and lived till 83 years. He gained popularity through his phenomenal writing talent where he was able to publish various novels. Some of his most famous writings taught in school to date include Things Fall Apart, No Longer At Ease, In Arrow of God, and A Man of the People. His literary works, like many other African novelists, centered around the emergence of white people to the African continent, their influence over the Africans, and the post effects of colonialism.

Achebe was well versed in the English language and went ahead to become a teacher before joining the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation where he served as a director of external broadcasting. Years later, he wrote a book that would forever change the African scene in literature.

It's known that the novel Things Fall Apart helped create the Nigerian literary renaissance of the 1960s. It is the most read, analyzed, and translated African novel of all time.

During the 1967 Biafra War, Achebe took a great stand to support the Biafran Independence and acted as the ambassador for the new country. On top of colonialism, he explored other themes in his work like culture, masculinity and femininity, politics, and history. His legacy is annually celebrated on his birthday 16th November, at the Chinua Achebe Literary Festival.
