Black Mothers' Sons Do Matter

Black Mothers' Sons Do Matter

You know, good old Ella Baker said,"until the killing of black men, black mother's sons becomes as important to the rest of the country as the killing of a white mother's son, we who believe in freedom cannot rest until this happens." grandma quoted continuing, "I'd like to believe she hoped that this unrest would carry on even after her demise in 1986, till indeed the black mother's son, mattered as much. "So did someone pick up this old lady's fight that you seem to be caring so much about?" Ada queried. "Of course, grandma said glassy eyed, so many black activists came up like Alicia Garza, who was born on the 4th of January 1981. She started early on to be engaged in activism. By age 12, she was promoting school sex education and birth control. In her final year at college, she helped organize the first women of color conference in 2002. She went ahead to form the Black Lives Matter hashtag with Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors following the acquittal of George Zimmerman of the murder of seventeen year old Trayvon Martin in 2013. The hashtag conceived the Black Lives Matter movement after a number of black people were victims of police brutality and became popular after the emergence of protests in Fergurson, Missouri following the death of Michael Brown in 2014. Alicia Garza said in her book, THE PURPOSE OF POWER, "Hashtags do not start movements people do. Movements do not have official moments when they start and end and there is never just one person who initiates them." Indeed the movement didn't end there, as the Black Lives Matter project is now a member led global network of more than forty chapters. Starting the movement and writing a book is not all that she did: she has gone on to create a podcast," lady don't take no", write articles that have been featured in Time, Mic, The guardian, Essence and is also the senior advisor on strategy at the National Domestic Worker's Alliance. "I hope to God that she got some kind of trophy for all those beautiful things she's doing", Ada noted. Grandma laughed saying, "Note that that's what's most important but she was indeed recognized on the list root 100 list of African American Achievers between the ages of 25 and 45, awarded the Sydney peace price in 2017, named in the inaugural cohort of the Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity to mention but a few." "Why do only black lives have to matter grandma?" Ada asked. Grandma replied saying, I guess you'll have to listen to what Barack Obama once said, "It's important for us to also understand that the phrase 'Black Lives Matter' simply refers to the notion that there's a specific vulnerability for African Americans that needs to be addressed. It's not meant to suggest that other lives don't matter. It's to suggest that other folks aren't experiencing this particular vulnerability."
