The Bronze Titan
So, I told you about the Cuban leader, Antonio Maceo Grajales being a superhero, and you thought I was just spinning a tale. I wish I were, but even a tale couldn't do him any justice. The world wasn't ready for this man who was born on 14th June, 1845, a son to a Venezuelan Mulatto and an Afro Cuban woman. Maceo joined the independence army in 1868 and ascended to general in a span of seconds!!! Okay let's skip the hyperbole. More of thirty years but that was a miracle coming from an Afro Cuban as ranks were rarely accorded to them. That goes to show he was too skilled that even when one hated Afros would still promote him. He recuperated from over twenty five war injuries over the course of five hundred military battles and still led his men with vigor like all he had was a blister. I tell you Marvel's got nothing on the man. No wonder his men called him “the bronze titan” and the Spaniards called him, “the Greater Lion”. Maceo did not tolerate any racism and in fact encouraged Cuban slaves to join the insurgency during the second phase of the Cuban war. In addition, he said the war for independence would liberate the three hundred Cuban slaves and added that the flag represented equality of all men. His love for equality is further portrayed when he said,“Aqui no hay negritos ni blanquitos sino cubanos (“Here there are not little Blacks or little Whites, only Cubans”) Show me a greater hero. Maceo also refused to sign the “El Pacto de Sanjon” as it did not abolish slavery. Sadly, his love for equality later led to his murder on December 7th, 1896. So yes he is a super hero as even when he knew it would be some kind of “give me liberty for give me death,” still said, “I don't want victory if it goes accompanied with dishonor.” Next time i’ll tell you about a Ugandan man who like Maceo, has stuck to his gut and chased his dream.
