The Best There Ever Was

The Best There Ever Was

Unless you are an inhabitant of a cave and have never been in contact with modern-day technology, then there is no way that you have not heard of Serena Williams; one of the most impactful women in not only black history but of the female gender across the globe. Aged 40, Williams has accomplished what was thought, by some, to be impossible; consistency in success. Taking a look at some of her greatest accomplishments, we highlight her No.1 World rank in singles by the WTA for 319 weeks, 23 Grand Slam singles titles most won by any player in the Open Era, and in total, an 84.6% Career record to mention but a few. Now, if that isn’t impressive, tell me what is.

Recently, a film titled King Richard, based on the life of the Williams family, brought light to her childhood, the inception of a sport that would change her life forever. This was all started by a dream, held by her father, Richard Williams, who for one believed that his daughters had one path. They either made it in tennis, or they made it. There was no compromise. And indeed, with great determination, hard work, perseverance, and several rejections, a dream was birthed into reality. Serena won her first major singles title at the 1999 US Open and from herein never looked back. A few years prior, her father trained her sister, Venus, and mainly focused his attention on her. Venus became a world sensation before Serena did however, their father assured Serena, “Venus will become number one in the world, you will one day be the best there ever was.” Years later, we witness his prediction play out as Serena has almost totally eclipsed her sister’s victory.

The sisters have played together and have won over 14 major women’s doubles titles. In 2016, Serena was the highest-paid woman athlete in the world and in 2017 she appeared as the only woman on Forbes’ list of the 100 highest-paid athletes with $27 million in prize money and endorsements.

Every statement involving the name Serena Williams is attached to greatness and success and it’s a no-brainer that she has her very own building in her name by the world re-known sports brand, Nike. This 1-million-square-foot building is Nike’s biggest design and creativity investment.
