I'm The First Simone Biles
“ I’m going to go out there and represent the U.S.A., represent World Champions Centre, and represent Black and brown girls over the world, ” Simone Biles once said in a telephone interview. Believe me, when I tell you to always take a black woman’s word for what it is, for Simone Arianne Biles, born 14th March 1997 and adopted by grandparents, Ronald and Nellie Biles, has done wonders as a gymnast. I could start by telling you she was discovered at age six on a trip to a local gym or I could tell you that Simone Biles holds seven Olympic medals, twenty-five world championship records and is not only the most decorated gymnast in history but is considered to be the greatest of all time. “ Wait a minute grandma, isn't that the same woman that quit during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and we are applauding her because?” May asked. “ I'm glad you brought that up May for that right there was when her heroism was most portrayed to me. Did you know she was body-shamed in 2013 and yet she continued to make it to the 2016 Olympics, winning the women’s gymnastics all-round title on the 11th of August 2016 becoming the first woman in twenty years to win back-to-back world and Olympic all round titles? Yes, she's also the only publicly known survivor of sexual predator, Larry Nassar, who continues to compete in gymnastics. I tell you, it takes courage to keep on playing and even earn four skills named after you, all a combination of daring flips and twists, when the people around you that are supposed to protect you like former team USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, are the ones endangering your life. So yes Simone Biles is a strong woman for when she suffered from an alarming mental hiccup known as “the twisties” during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, leaving her unsure of her whereabouts midair, she had to put her health first by withdrawing from her next four events and only participated in the final one. And she still managed to win a team silver and a balance beam bronze. Indeed, only Simone Biles can win after a difficult day like that after all she said once, “I'm not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I'm the first Simone Biles.” Yes, she is for she was even honored with the presidential medal of freedom by President Joe Biden on July 7th,2021. ”I'd like us to applaud a black woman who, not only showed us what it means to win but also showed us the courage to stand up for your mental health when all they expect from you is a performance. Like three Olympic gold medalist, Tianna Bartoletta observed, “They watched the greatest gymnast of all time walk off the biggest stage and I guarantee you that for the first time that same someone somewhere is thinking …if she can walk away from that – with all that on the line for her, with the entire country and maybe even the world coming in hot with their hot takes – maybe, just maybe I can take this step to walk too. There’s a lot of power in maybe. And hope is one helluva drug”. Indeed she gave us hope and like Simone, next, I'll have to spin the tale on Maya Angelou, who brought hope with her pen.
